Season Review

Jordan

My season started with a new coach, new sponsor in FZ Forza and a new training focus. My new coach Steve Butler put us through a really tough few weeks of pre season training but I feel this was a key a successful start to the season. I made my first ever circuit final in September at the Polish International. This was just a month or so into the season. It was an incredible feeling and was tough to lose out in the final but I was very proud of my performances throughout the tournament.

My second notable performance was the Welsh Open in December. I was extremely ill for around the week before the tournament and was unsure even the day before my first round whether I would be able to play but Welsh Open is one of my favourite tournaments in the calendar so I was determined to play. I reached a Semi final in Wales and lost out to the eventual winner. I was just extremely happy I was even able to play the tournament so the Semi Final was a great result for me.

2018 started with a couple of tough tournaments, so I was looking forward to playing Welsh Senior Nationals and especially as this year my little sister and I played doubles together, but I actually ended up playing Lowri in the final of the Women’s Singles. She was definitely my toughest opponent of 2018 and I hope that playing her doesn’t become a regular thing although I'm sure it will. It was great to gain my 3rd consecutive Senior National Singles Title.

In April I represented Wales in my second European Individual Championships. I lost out to a tough opponent in Maria Ulitina in a great 3 set match but was great to be at a Euros again and gained confidence from that performance.

This then I feel helped me going into Slovenia International a couple of weeks later, where I reached a Semi Final. First round of this tournament I had to play Ayla Huser from Switzerland who I had previously played in the Final of Poland and in the Irish Open losing out both times. So to beat her was a huge mental boost for me and gave me confidence going into the next round. I lost out to the eventual winner of the tournament in the Semis but showed a really consistent level of performance throughout the tournament which in previous years I would not have been able to do.

It was great to end my season with a Final at the Latvian International. 3 tough sets and just short of an hour match I was obviously gutted to be so close to my first Circuit win and not get over the line but 12 months ago I would of never been in a position to be challenging for a tournament title so to come so far this season has been amazing for me. I am excited to start my next block of summer training in a few weeks and hopefully will be able to go one step further and gain a tournament title.

I would like to thank Badminton Wales for their support this season along with my coach Steve, my new sponsor FZ Forza and Mum, Dad and Lowri for making it possible to travel the world competing and supporting me throughout the ups and downs of the season.
