Polish International 2018
My pre-season training started a little later than I would have hoped as I picked up an injury at the end of last season. Having said this I ended the season well with some great results so was looking forward to getting back. My coach and I made the most of this time to work on smaller details of my game to make the best of a bad situation.
Polish International 2017 was a great tournament for me as I made my first circuit final. This year the tournament was stronger as it included players from Asia. My first two rounds of the tournament where comfortable beating Julia Bitsoukova 21-11 21-11 and Anna Bygum 21-12 21-18. I felt I played smart and controlled in these two games to be ready for my quarter final the following day.
The quarter final was against Shikha Gautam from India. I started the game poorly and had a huge deficit to make up. I lost the first set 21-12. I was determined to start the second quicker and pressure my opponent. My performance was much better in this set. It was tight all the way to the end of a set with some big rallies and close line calls but I managed to close the set out 21-19. The third set I used the momentum gained at the end of the 2nd to start well and got the lead. This was so important as the set went on as Shikha came back at the end of the match and challenged me right until the end. I managed to win the 3rd 20-19. This was a great win for me and I was really pleased to get through some tight moments and a 50 minute match.
My semi final was against Rituparna Das of India. I lost the 1st set 21-19 after coming back from behind to level the score. She was a very experienced player and I couldn’t keep my level consistent enough. I lost the 2nd 21-11. Das went on to win the tournament.
I can take a lot of positives from this tournament and hit my pre tournament target of a semi final set by my coach and I. I also gained a lot of experience, dealing with some decisions not going in my favour and not letting this effect my performance but actually using it in a positive way. Next up for me is Dutch Open in a weeks time.
