Day 2 at the 2015 Yonex Welsh International and the 3rd round of Men’s Singles qualifying followed by the 1st round of the Main Draw.

In the 3rd qualifying round of the Men’s Singles Welsh youngster Tsung Fong Mo was unable to repeat his success of the previous day doing down in 2 sets to England’s James Farmer.  Joining James in the Main Draw were England’s Rohan Midha, Ireland’s Joshua Magee, India’s Aditya Prakash, Scotland’s Matt Carder, Chinese Taipei’s Chia Hao Lee, Poland’s Mateusz Swierczynki,  and Spain’s Luis Enrique Penalver. 

Onto the Main Draw and in the Men’s Singles, in what was the match of the day, no. 1 seed Russia’s Vladimir Malkov had a major scare against Spain’s Luis Enrique Penalver losing the 1st set 22-24 before eventually coming through 22-20, 21-19 in a match lasting 71 minutes. Both the 3rd and 4th seeds went out, Austria’s Luka Wraber losing out in 3 sets to Belgium’s Maxime Moreels and Ukraine’s Dmytro Zavadsky going down in 2 sets to Portugal’s Pedro Martins.

In the Women’s Singles Wales’ Jordan Hart, having qualified on day 1, was unable to compete having suffered an injury in her 2nd qualifying match. Welsh no. 1 Carissa Turner was unable to progress losing in 2 sets 13-21, 18-21 to the Netherlands’ Gayle Mahulette.  The no. 3 seed, Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri, was the only seed not to progress to the round of 16, going down in a very tight 2 sets encounter 21-23, 20-22 encounter to Chinese Taipei’s Chia Hsin Lee. 

In the Men’s Doubles all the seeds moved safely into the round of 16. They were also joined by Ireland’s Joshua & Sam Magee who had a titanic struggle with England’s Robert Golding & Victor Liew before coming through 22-24, 21-15, 24-22. 

In the Women’s Doubles, due to a number of byes and walkovers, only 5 matches were played with the pairings of Australia’s Setyana Mapasa & Gronya Somerville, Spain’s Laura Molina & Haidee Ojeda, France’s Marie Batomene & Emilie Lefel, Ireland’s Sara Boyle and Rachael Darragh and England’s Jenny Moore & Victoria Williams all winning in 2 sets and moving into the round of 16.

In the Mixed Doubles all the seeds progressed although the no. 5 seeds Australia’s Sawan Serasinghe & Setyana Mapasa had a battle against England’s Harry Arksey & Sarah Walker before coming through in 3 sets. Another highlight was the match between the English pairings of Ryan Jing Quek & Meera Sivakumaran and Zach Russ & Sian Kelly with Quek & Sivakumaran eventually prevailing 19-21, 21-19, 21-19.

Today sees the round of 16 and the quarter finals and we look forward to another exciting day’s play.
