Cardiff Metropolitan University

Badminton Wales’ association with Cardiff Metropolitan University stems back over a considerable few years having worked closely with Dr Mike Hughes who shaped our physiological support. Dr Mike Hughes’s experience and expertise has been shaped through his continued work with Badminton England where he has guided their performance team on physiological testing and protocol.

In addition to Dr Mikes Hughes’s expertise over the past year Badminton Wales has forged a partnership within the Strength and Conditioning department where our Regional Academy players have had access to brand new state of the art facilities and expertise coaching from Tom Mathews and Jason Pedeley.

“Athletic development of children is essential to allow them to succeed in which ever sport(s) they choose to pursue. Strength and conditioning training gives children the physical qualities and competencies that allows them to execute sport specific skills effectively, explosively and with minimal risk of injury. At Cardiff Metropolitan University we specialise in youth athletic development from a research and application perspective. Our programme is underpinned by the latest scientific research into long-term athlete development meaning the junior players form Badminton Wales are treated as such, with age appropriate training programmes targeting all elements of athletic motor development. As a result, the players are better equipped to perform the skills and training loads required to succeed on court and more robust against the risk of injury that is inherent with participation in any sport." Jason Pedley | MSc FHEA ASCC

The provision provided by Cardiff Met has been vital to our players continued development, focusing on more of the power aspects of S&C by using the purpose-built platforms and conditioning room the improvement in their overall profiles has been remarkable. Ou relationship with Cardiff Met goes from strength to strength as its set to become the first Badminton Wales Satellite Centre and Academy catering for players of all levels from Beginner to Advanced.
