January 2017

Badminton Wales are pleased to announce its official partnership with Cardiff Metropolitan University. The launch of our partnership will be on the 23 rd of January at the brand new “Archers Arena” facility which has eight sprung wood courts. The new facility is a statement of Cardiff Met’s commitment to providing its students and aspiring athletes the very best facilities available.

Over recent months there has been considerable work between both Badminton Wales and Cardiff Metropolitan to launching a badminton Academy, in recent years the profile of Badminton within the University has gone up due to the involvement and work of Nic Strange who has established a robust student badminton program with the support of Sports Head of Programming Chris Jennings.

“The newly established partnership between Cardiff Metropolitan University and Badminton Wales provides both organisations with exciting opportunities to develop the game at all levels”

The Badminton Academy will cater for all standards of play offering a progressive player pathway from beginner to advanced. Within the advanced level Badminton Wales Regional Academy players will receive access and support to be part of an environment which will provide them among the best facilities in Wales.

“It’s an incredibly exciting opportunity for Badminton Wales to be partnering with the leading Sports University in Wales. With the launch of the Academy it enables us to signpost to it from other initiatives we have launched over recent months one being Shuttle Time.  The Academy will offer an additional session for our Regional Academy players who will have full access to coaching and support. This partnership I believe will provide the foundation to retaining our players in Wales when they get to an age where they are looking at University options, our intention is to provide our players with an opportunity and the exposure at a young age to what a comprehensive badminton and academic program can look like which in time will help us nurture talent within the Capital and surrounding areas.” Matthew Hughes Performance Manager/National Coach

The partnership with Cardiff Met also represents the first Badminton Wales Satellite Centre which will provide additional support through coach and player mentoring linking directly to Badminton Wales Coaches and it’s resources. The Satellite Centre will then feed into the Badminton Wales Regional Academy, clarity on our players development from a young age is key to laying the foundations for a successful future.
