Nationals

This past weekend saw many junior badminton players celebrating gaining National titles at the Yonex Junior National Badminton Championships held at Deeside Leisure Centre.

Day 1 saw the Under 11, Under 15 and Under 19 age groups compete with the Under 15 age group kick starting the competition. In the Boys singles, 1st seed Andrew Oates (NEWBA) took the title, defeating Tomos Whiteman (Gwent) in 3 sets, 21/8 18/21 21/15. Meanwhile, Gean Sou Mo (Mid Glam) eased to victory in the Girls singles overcoming doubles partner Katie Whiteman in the final 21/8 21/14.Andrew Oates (NEWBA) and Joe Cottrill (Conwy) claimed victory in the Boys doubles defeating Tomos Whiteman and James Morris (Gwent) 21/19 21/14 in the final. Girls doubles top seeds Gean Sou Mo and Katie Whiteman triumphed over Amy Jukes (NEWBA) and Elis Richards (SAWGBA) winning the encounter, 21/13 21/10. There were some good matches in the Under 15 mixed event, however it was Tomos Whiteman and Katie Whiteman who took the title, winning 22/20 21/17 against Andrew Oates and Amy Jukes.

Following this was the Under11 event. The Boys singles event saw Daniel Clarke (Carmarthen) take the title, overcoming Daniel Kite (Pembroke) in the final in 2 sets 21/6 21/6. Aimee Whiteman took the Girls singles title, in what turned out to be an excellent match beating Lowri Hart (Pembroke) in 3 close games 21/13 20/22 21/17. The Whiteman twins, Lucie and Aimie, retained the Girls doubles title, winning the final against Lydia Morris (Gwent) and Urvi Modha (NEWBA) 21/6 21/6. Daniel Clarke and Lowri Hart became the mixed doubles champions, winning in the final against Daniel Kite and Lucie Whiteman 21/9 21/13.

Tsung Fong Mo (Mid Glam) won his first Under 19 National Singles title, defeating Matthew Vacher (NEWBA) 21/10 21/19. The well-established pair of Adam Stewart (NEWBA) and Matthew Vacher (NEWBA) teamed up to take the Boys doubles title defeating Tsung Fong Mo (Mid Glam) and Matthew Pritchard (South Glam) 16/21 21/15 21/14. Tsung Fong and Gean Sou added another title of the day to their names by taking the mixed doubles title. In the final they prevailed over Matthew Vacher and Emilie Gwilt 21/16 21/19.

Day 2 started with the Under 13 events. In the Boys singles, Oliver Stansfield (Gwent) retained the title he won last year by defeating Iwan Price (Gwent) in the final 21/5 21/10. The Under 11 finalist of Aimee Whiteman and Lowri Hart met again in the U13 Girls singles final. The outcome was the same with Aimee taking the title 21/11 21/14. Oliver Stansfield and Elliot Simmonds went on to take the doubles title with Amogh Patil and Morgan Harding (NEWBA) finishing in 2nd position. Bethany Jones and Kelly Yip (Gwent) claimed the U13 Girls doubles title with the Whiteman twins finishing in 2nd position. Oliver Stansfield made it 3 titles in the Under 13 age group by pairing up with Aimee Whiteman to take the mixed title against Elliot Simmonds and Bethany Jones (Gwent) 21/9 21/10.

The final event of the tournament was the Under 17 age group. Tsung Fong Mo (Mid Glam) prevailed over doubles partner Matthew Pritchard in 2 sets 21/16 21/18. Gean Sou Mo took the Under 17 Girls singles title, winning the final 21/16 21/17 against Emilie Gwilt. After their Under 19 doubles disappointment, Mo and Pritchard took the Under 17 Boys doubles title with James Ellaway and Scott Oates finishing in 2nd position. Gean Sou Mo and Katie Whiteman added the girls’ double title to their name defeating Bethan Sudder (NEWBA) and Morgan Williams (Gwent) 21/6 21/14. The last event of the day saw Tsung Fong Mo pair up with sister Gean Sou Mo to take the Under 17 mixed title. A total of 9 National Titles for both the Mos and Whitemans.
