The Welsh University Championships took place over the weekend with the Team Event on the Saturday and the Individual on the Sunday.

On the first day of the Championships four Universities took part in the Team Event; Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff and Swansea.
Both Cardiff and Swansea showed dominance over Bangor and Aberystwyth during the day and the Final match decided who would come out on top.

Cardiff got off to a great start going 2-0 up in matches but Swansea showed incredible fight and determination to bring the score back to level at 2-2. The final game was an intense, nail biting match but Cardiff held their nerve and came away with the title!

WUC Team

With a slight change to the regulations this year, players who did not compete in the Team were still able to compete in the Individual event. This meant that students from USW were also able to compete.

There were 19 entrants in the Men’s Singles this year which resulted in 6 groups battling it out for places in the knock out rounds.
Last years Winner, Will Peck made it through to the Final again after beating David Richardson in the Semi Final in a tough three set battle which went to setting. Lee Zia Heng and Aidan Gibbons faced off in the other Semi Final with Heng winning in two close sets. The Final was another three setter for Peck but this time he was not victorious, Lee Zia Heng bested him 14-21, 21-10, 21-8.

The Women’s Singles was formed of two groups. Both Hannah Hernon and Amy Genders came top of their groups with Becky Francis and Elsie Wong coming in second. Wong went on to beat Hernon in straight sets in the Semi Finals, as did Genders against Francis. Genders beat Wong in the group so the Final was a chance for revenge, however Genders remained dominant and won 21-12, 21-8.

The Men’s Doubles saw some exciting matches played. Lee Zia Heng could not add another medal to his roster with partner Gerard Lee as they lost to Aidan Gibbons and Anish Patel in the Semi Finals. Henry Wong and Larson Tan did well to come top of their group and continued their form in the Semi Finals winning comfortably against Jacky Foo and Man Yin. The Final was a thrilling match with the first set going to Wong and Tan 23-21, but Gibbons and Patel fought back and took the remaining two sets 21-12, 21-16.

Genders added another Gold to her roster in the Women’s Doubles which was one group of 5. This meant that the overall positions in the group would determine the Winner and Runner Up. Becky Francis and Elsie Wong played very well but Sophie Ttophi and Amy Genders were too strong and they had to settle for second place.

The Mixed Doubles players showed some great stamina with some big matches finishing off the day. Henry Wong and Ashley Lee won a tough three set match to reach the Semi Finals, where they again had another 3 setter! Unfortunately this time the result was not in their favour losing against Matt Rankenhohn and Elsie Wong while David Richardson and Sophie Ttophi had a considerably easier win over Josh Backhouse and Becky Francis. Despite being the first pair to get more than 10 against Richardson and Ttophi, Wong and Rankenhohn could not produce the performance needed to beat the Swansea University pair. Ttophi and Richardson won the Final match of the day 21-14, 21-13.
