Wrexham 5x60

The Wrexham Schools 5x60 Badminton competition took place on Thursday 6th November 2014 at Gwyn Evans Sports Centre, Wrexham. The event was split into a Boys and Girls event both with Year 7&8 and Year 9&10 categories. Seven Secondary Schools from Wrexham competed across both the Girls and Boys events. It was a great turn out with a fantastic standard of play and level of competition throughout the event.

Five boys' teams in the Year 7&8 category; Darland, St Joseph’s, Bryn Alyn, The Maelor Penley and Clywedog, competed against each other in a round robin format for a chance to win this age group. There were some very close games but St Joseph’s took the win, winning all of their four matches against Darland High School, The Maelor Penley, Bryn Alyn and Ysgol Clywedog.

Bryn Alyn, The Maelor Penley, Darland and St Joseph’s competed against each other in the Year 7&8 Girls round robin competition. The Maelor Penley and St Joseph’s had a very close match, with St Joseph’s just narrowly losing 3-2, meaning The Maelor Penley were victorious in this category.

Darland, St Joseph’s, Morgan Llwyd, The Maelor Penley and Ruabon competed against each other in the Year 9&10 Boys' Competition for a chance to compete in the Regional finals in Flintshire in February 2015. There was some very tough competition but St Joseph’s won all four of their games, with The Maelor Penley just missing out on second place to Darland by 19 points.

The girls' Year 9&10 competition consisted of seven teams split into two groups, with St Joseph’s, The Maelor Penley, Bryn Alyn and Clywedog in Group One and Darland, Morgan Llwyd and Ruabon in Group Two. The winners from each group went through and played each other to determine first and second place. The group winners, St Joseph’s and Darland, played a tough match with Darland fighting until the end, with the final result being 5-0 to St Joseph’s.

The day was a great success, all pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day with some very tough competition on court. The Maelor Penley and St Joseph’s are going through to the Regional 5x60 Badminton Competition in February 2015, as Year 7&8 Girls Winners and Year 7&8 Boys, Year 9&10 Boys and Girls' Winners respectively.

I would like to thank the volunteers and Wrexham AYP Officers for helping out on the day and making it another great success.
