This Winter’s Powys Open dawned bright (rainy) and early (very) at 9am on the 15th of December. Players took to the courts at Brecon Leisure Centre to battle it out. There was some tough competition, some excellent sportsmanship and, at the end of the day, several hours of brilliant badminton.

To kick things off was the U11 boys’ singles and girls’ singles. After several tough games, Alfie came in first (winning 5 games) with Mason coming in a close second with four games. Following their singles, Alfie paired up with Eden to win the U11 boys doubles. George and Richie, having narrowly lost out in the singles, paired up to take the silver. Meanwhile, Hannah won all of her games in the girls’ U11 singles, with Ella coming in second. Hannah and Attie then took on the doubles together, beating Ella and Lottie to the gold. Excellent play was seen from all of the U11s, llongyfarchiadau!

The day wasn’t over for several of the U11s, however. Due to several players being unable to attend due to illness, Ella, Attie and George stepped up to compete in the U13 mixed. In an exciting game, Ella and Harri just beat George and Attie. Meanwhile, in the U13s boys’ singles, Hector took gold with Olly narrowly beating Harri to silver. Hector and Olly teamed up to win gold in the double against Harri and Dan. With a final score of 21-17, it was a close one!

In the U15 boys’ singles, Llwyd and Nanditha fought for gold with Llwyd winning in a tight game. Unfortunately, due to the number of players unable to attend, the boys doubles was not able to run. Not quite finished, Llwyd and Nanditha went on the play the U17 singles with the same result – Llwyd took gold, Nanditha took silver. In the U17 doubles, Llwyd and Maddox won gold with Adam and Nanditha winning silver.
In the girls’ U17 singles, Hannah stepped on court yet again. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough - gold was won by Lydia and silver by Fearne.
Congratulations to all who played, scored and supported – we’ll see you again soon!
