The weekend of the 3rd / 4th September, saw young Welsh star Aimie Whiteman competing in the U15 Irish Open, held in Baldoyle Badminton Centre in Dublin. The 13 year old entered all 3 disciplines. She started off her campaign in the Girls Singles, where she had a thrilling 3-setter against Irish seed Kim Feehily, unfortunately coming up short 22-24 in the third set (22-24, 23-21, 22-24).

Not letting this hard loss deter her, Aimie took to the court in the Mixed Doubles with English partner, Alex Green. They had a string of convincing wins throughout the weekend, not dropping a single set until the semi-finals where they came across 3rd seeds Peter McDonald and Kerry Fallon. The Anglo-Welsh pairing battled through to beat them 21-17, 16-21, 21-13. In the finals, Aimie and Alex played against the Irish pairing of Daniel O’Meara and Orla Flynn. Aimie and Alex proved unbeatable, comfortably winning the Gold medal in 2 sets, 21-14 and 21-15.

Aimie also achieved success in the Girls Doubles, where she paired up with Caitlin Harper of England. The girls appeared to play well together, winning their first few games with relative ease. They were unfortunate to just miss out on a spot in the final, losing in the third set of the semi-final 21-19 to Aimee Hong and Therese Nguyen of Norway.

A hugely successful weekend for Aimie, coming away with a Gold and a Bronze in her first 2016-17 badminton tournament… Congratulations! To see the full set of results, please click here.
