Gloucester Sets The Season Off
Welsh players begin season showing great promise.
With seasons getting longer, the opening event of the new Badminton England season saw the U-17’s travel to Gloucester to play in the Bronze/Gold and Gold* events. 11 Welsh players made the trip to compete and many came away with medals.
Adil Khan won the bronze medal in the Gold Star with a series of very strong performances including a tight 3-set victory in the Group phase against ¾ seed Joe Scott. Winning through to the semi final he came up against eventual winner Nadeem Dalvi. After a nervous start, Adil was unlucky not to take the match to a decider going down 21-5 21-19.
In the U17 Bronze, the stars of Wales were Nabil Taufiqurrahman and Maisie Kite in their winning of medals..
Nabil won through his very tight group including an excellent win against the top seed before taking the bronze medal home.
Maisie Kite played 11 matches during the day and also came away with 2 Bronze medals. Her continued improvements in the RA West is starting to show with her on court performances.
Other notable performances include Dan Kite’s quarter final appearance in the U17 Gold, Arnav Patil’s tremendous group stage match against top seed Hoang Blake going down 23-21 in the third.
Saffron Morris was one of the youngest competitors and pushed top seed Lisa Curtain is a tight match. Nye Bennet and Matthew Logan had to cross the Bridge to play each other and then produced a stunning 21-20 match.
It was a strong start to the season and showed excellent promise for all the Welsh players who will now continue their hard work and hopefully can all reproduce the strong performances and convert them in to more great results.
Good luck to all.
