The first tournament of the newly re-branded Badminton Wales Senior Gold Series was held at Pontypool Active Living Centre last Sunday 1st October. The event organised by Newport Badminton Club and main sponsor Newtown Motors Cwmbran Vauxhall was well attended and saw a broad competitive standard.

The day started early with the Mixed Doubles, which was aimed at club players who enjoy competition. The earlier start meant players could play competitive games, gain a Welsh ranking, and be finished before lunch time. The Mixed Doubles event was won 21-17 by Chloe Le Tissier and James Ellaway, who both had a busy day with multiple events. The final was a tight game with Runners’ Up Dafydd Price and Aimie Whiteman coming very close in a hard-fought game.

James Ellaway went on to win the Men’s Doubles with partner Scott Oates, with the Runners’ Up being Man Yin Leung and Matthew Lee. The final was a fast, high impact game, where the lead changed back and forth, 15-10, 15-17, 15-11.

The Men’s Singles was eventually won by Man Yin Leung who delivered a fantastic performance, equalled by the Runner Up Dafydd Price. Those that stayed to the end were treated to a fast game which clearly demanded a high level of fitness in some long rallies, 15-3, 15-12.

The Ladies Doubles was won by Chloe Le Tissier and Aimie Whiteman, against Helen Lane and Natalie Yandle. Helen and Natalie made a strong showing in the second game of the match, but weren’t able to take the match to a third set, 21-5, 21-16.
Chloe Le Tissier was in action for her third event of the day winning the Ladies Singles in a very closely contested match with Runner Up, Lowri Hart. The 15-12 15-14 score line illustrates just how close the game was, it was tense throughout providing great entertainment for those watching.
Shot of the day goes to Carys Jones, whose instinctive smash defence, whilst not even facing the right way must be seen to be believed. Luckily, we have this shot, and several other games on video, so to see the unbelievable skill check out our Facebook page;

We are, as always, very grateful to our sponsors who make the tournament possible with their financial support, which enables us to raise funds for our Junior Club development in Newport.
This year Newtown Motors Cwmbran Vauxhall were the main sponsor, with water bottle gifts from Welsh Water, and additional support from One Life Financial Planning, Brewin Dolphin and Sustainable Energy. It is important we recognise their involvement, as the tournaments and development of our sport in Wales would not be possible without them. Thank you.
