Develepment - Vale of Glamorgan

The Vale of Glamorgan 5 x 60 badminton competition was held at Penarth Leisure Centre over two days.  The schools that took part included Stanwell, St Cyres, Bro Morgannwg, Barry Boys, Bryn Hafren, Sir Richard Gwyn, Llantwit Major and Cowbridge.  Year 7 and 8 boys competition had 6 teams, year 7 and 8 girls had 4 teams, year 9 and 10 boys had 7 teams and year 9 and 10 girls had 5 teams.

The day was supported by 10 volunteers from Cardiff and Vale College without whom the day would have been impossible to run as they were responsible for umpiring all of the games played.  Also in charge of the results and organising the fixtures of the competitions were the Cardiff 5 x 60 officers who made the competition run as smoothly as possible.

In the 5 x 60 events each team of 4 players played 2 singles matches and 3 doubles matches within a group.  An excellent standard was played throughout with many of the games going to setting.  The runners up from the year 7 and 8 girls' competition were Sir Richard Gwyn and the winning team were from Cowbridge High.  In the year 7 and 8 boys' competition the Stanwell team took the runner up position with Cowbridge High taking first place.

In the year 9 and 10 girls' competition the runners up were Cowbridge with Stanwell taking first place.  In the year 9 and 10 boys' competition Sir Richard Gwyn took the runner up position to Cowbridge who took first place.  The winners of each competition will now go through to play in the regional event in the New Year.

This competition has gone from strength to strength with a record number of schools taking part.  It was an excellent day of badminton and a pleasure to see so many young people taking part.
