On February 23rd 2014, Bryn Estyn Badminton Centre hosted the 'Leadership Award in Badminton' where 8 learners successfully completed their first step on the coaching ladder. This award is endorsed through Badminton Wales and Sports Leaders UK; the eight successful candidates can now assist in badminton activities in their local club or school.

The course was fun and practical with candidates gaining practice on their leadership skills. Most of these candidates regularly attend their local club and also the 5x60 scheme so can now put this course into practice.

Many of these candidates are now keen to move onto the next level and complete their UK Coaching Certificate Level 1 Award in Badminton. On completing this course, a couple of the learners wish to set up a new club in Llanrwst and Kinmel Bay in the near future with the help of the Badminton Development Officer (BDO).

One of the learners, Steven Shaw, said of the course,
“The course was a good experience; I learnt a lot. I hope I can assist in my local club.”

BDO Stephanie Marti-Jones commented,
"It is great to see young players wanting to get involved and become a leader. Hopefully many schools in Conwy will take the opportunity of the course and we will see many more qualified young leaders in badminton."

There are two more planned Leadership Award Courses at Llandrillo College and Ysgol John Bright.
