The last week has seen 3 successful events taking place in Mid & North Wales. The 5x60 Regional finals in Welshpool were followed by BISI Teacher Training in Deeside and a Badminton Leadership Award in Connah's Quay.

5x60 Regional Competition

The 5x60 regional finals took place in Welshpool on Wednesday 13th March. The county winners from each region were invited to the event to decide on a winner for the North. The winners and runners up would be going down to the Welsh National finals in Newtown. There was a good level of competition between all the participants with a few matches being extremely close. The pupils taking part really enjoyed the day and did very well.

The results were as follows:

Year 7&8 boys - Winners - Elfed, Runners Up - Newtown.

Year 7&8 girls - Winners - Maes Garmon, Runners Up - Ysgol Towyn.

Year 9&10 boys - Winners - Mold Alun, Runners Up - Llanfair Caereinion.

Year 9&10 girls - Winners - Newtown.

There was a very high standard of play from all those who entered. Well done to all the teams who attended and good luck to those teams who are playing in the finals.

BISI Teacher Training

Flintshire hosted a badminton teacher training course at Deeside Leisure Centre on Friday 15th March. It was a very successful day with eight local primary school teachers from different schools around the county attending. The teachers were shown how badminton could be adapted and used within physical education lessons and extra curricular sessions. All the teachers really enjoyed the training and found the sessions really useful in showing them new ideas. The teachers were all provided with equipment and a manual with session plans for each key stage to help them deliver the sessions within their school. Each school will be using their session plans to deliver badminton over the next term. It is then intended to hold a festival day for the pupils to meet together and practise their new skills.

Leadership Award in Badminton

Flintshire held its first Badminton Leadership Award of the year in Connah's Quay on Saturday 16th March. 17 young coaches and volunteers attended the course with a variety of different backgrounds from national players to volunteers and 5x60 officers. The course aimed to give the participants more information on the skills needed to coach and badminton specific knowledge. It was a highly successful day with all participants passing the course and some very promising young coaches to watch out for in the future identified.
