South Powys Shuttle

The South Powys Tournament in the Badminton Wales Junior Shuttle Series took place at Brecon Leisure Centre and Brecon High School on Sunday 30th November. With a record 71 contestants travelling from all regions of South Wales and neighbouring English counties, the tournament lasted over 8 hours and required 171 games of competitive badminton.

There were 4 entrants in the U11 boys singles with Joe Howells (Hereford) beating Tom Morgan (Gwent). Joe and Tom then teamed up to win the U11 boys doubles prevailing over Rahul Chawathe and Will Vaughan (S Glamorgan and Powys).  In the U11 girls singles, there were 5 entrants with Saffron Morris, aged 7 (Mid Glamorgan) beating Ella Williams (Hereford) in the final.  Ella then teamed up with Chloe Barton (West Malvern) to win the doubles defeating Saffron and Hannah Morgan (Pembrokeshire).

There were 16 entrants in the U13 boys singles with the gold medal winner being William Jowett (S Glamorgan). William edged out doubles partner Dylan Colmer (S Glamorgan) in the final.  The boys then paired up to win the U13 boys doubles beating Daniel Tong and Joshua Pinnell (Cardiff).  The U13 girls competition attracted 7 entrants with Hannah Warren (Avon) beating Chloe Douglas (Pembrokeshire).  Chloe teamed up with Cherisse Lau (Bridgend) to win the girls doubles defeating Saffron (from the U11s) and her older sister, Isabella Morris (Mid Glamorgan).

The U15 boys competition was a strongly fought age group with 22 entrants.  After 3 hours of matches, Ben Phillips (Hereford) beat Alex Grayer (Gwent) in the final.  Ben then teamed up with Max Williams (Hereford) to win the boys doubles prevailing over Ian Ren and Harvey Bourne Smith (South Glamorgan).  There were only 3 entrants in the U15 girls singles with Rebecca Williams (S Glamorgan) coming out on top.  In the doubles, Rebecca teamed up with Charlotte Baguley (S Glamorgan) to defeat the Powys pair of Clarisse Bartholemew and Meg Dingle.

Finally in the U17 age group, there were 8 entrants in the boys and 7 entrants in the girls competition.  The boys singles was won by Brandon Evans (Swansea) who took the gold medal over William Hughes (Pembrokeshire). Brandon teamed up with Lewis Williams (Mid Glamorgan) to win the doubles beating Luc Sinnadurai and Fraser Morgan (Powys).
