Last weekend a Memorial Tournament was held for Shirley Cox who unexpectedly passed away in July.
The doubles tournament attracted former and current Gwent players, parents and friends of Shirley from Abersychan Badminton Club of which she was a member.

Over 30 players of all ages took part in the doubles tournament to remember Shirley, a stalwart supporter of Gwent YCB. She had been a coach for over 20 years and saw many of her young players become members of the County and Wales Squads. Shirley would regularly attend tournaments in and around the Gwent area to support her athletes and the events.

Alyson Price helped run the event and said; "Shirley had coached at Cwmbran and Pontypool Leisure Centres as well as playing for Abersychan until a few months before her death. Although ill health forced her to slow down a bit, she was always interested in what her badminton friends were up to and tried to support them whenever she could. The tournament held in her memory was just the sort of event she would have enjoyed. Shirley really was a larger than life character and once met was never forgotten."

The tournament raised over £350 which was donated to Shirley's favourite local animal charity, All Creatures Great and Small, and it is hoped that this tournament will become an annual event.
