Saffron Devon

Young Welsh star Saffron Morris had a successful end to a very busy Celtic Challenge week. Saturday 20th February saw Saffron travel the long distance to Paignton, in order to participate in the Badminton England Devon U11 competition. First up was the Girls Doubles. Saffron played with Wiltshire's Katie Ovenden after a great result in Worcester a few weeks prior, which enabled them to be ranked as No. 2 seeds for the tournament. They were put in quite a competitive group, with the 3rd and 4th WS seeds playing together. After 2 very closely competitive games, Saffron and Katie just came up short.

In the singles event, Saffron had to face the perceived tournament favourite in her group. Her first singles match was against Jenny Tofts (Avon). Saffron comfortably came out on top 11-5, 11-4, which helped to give her further motivation to win her next game against the tournament favourite, Jennifer Lai. Saffron used perfect tactics to take the first set 11-9, and then in the second set reached another level entirely, visibly breaking her opponents spirit to win 11-6. Saffron, winning the group now found herself up against the No. 1 seed Shrishti Saravana for a place in the Semi Finals. Again, Saffron implemented great tactical play to win 11-8 19-17. In the Semi Final, Saffron's winning streak continued as she faced Keisha Tang. Saffron came out winner 11-5 11-8. After a long wait between the Semi-final and Final, Saffron faced the 3/4 seed, Mabel Rose Reid for the title. The final proved to be a see-saw match, Mabel winning 11-6 in the first, Saffron winning the second 11-7. The third game was very tight with some great play from both girls. Saffron was the first to gain the match point, leading 10-8. However, Mabel showing great mental strength and fight, used her greater age and experience to win the next 4 points to take the title 12-10. After coming so close to her first Gold Medal (2 Bronzes and 1 Silver in Doubles in the 3 previous English tournaments), Saffron got her first WS Silver. With 2 years left at U11, we are sure that she will get plenty more chances!
