Badminton Wales is sad to report the passing of Gareth Owen.

Gary (pictured bottom left in the photo above) joined Penarth Badminton Club in the early 1960s and quickly progressed to the first team before playing for the County and then representing Wales versus Germany.

Gary stayed playing with Penarth until his hip operation but continued to be an integral part of the club contributing heavily to its running and the organisation of club trips and tournaments including the European Top Clubs events.

For those of you who come to the Yonex Welsh International, you would have seen Gary on the officials' stage, doing a sterling job as shuttle control.

Hilton Brown, former Chairman of the Welsh Badminton Union, added his thoughts:

"I was saddened to read of the passing of Gareth - rather - Gary Owen.

I write as a former Chairman of the Welsh Badminton Union who had personal knowledge of Gary and had much admiration for his loyalty for the sport he loved. Gary was a very willing helper in many aspects of the sport whether it was at junior level, club level, county level, or helping out as shuttle controller in Welsh tournaments - and even as a photographer when needed. Yes, a real 'worker' who will be sadly missed.

My sympathies go out to his relatives and many friends who knew him. Wales has lost a great ambassador."
