The first division of the North Wales Senior Inter – County Badminton Championship saw the long awaited clash between NEWBA’s A and B Teams.

Although losing his three events, player of the match was undoubtedly Flint’s 15 years old Jamie Noble.

As anticipated, the A Team proved too strong for their fellow Association B Team players running out 8 – 0 winners.

However when the B Team’s Jamie Noble and partner Jane Givelin came up against Matty Burrows and Belinda Griffiths they surprised the more experienced pairing with high quality mixed play, taking the first game by 21/19.  Burrows and Griffiths recovered from the initial setback and with a change of tactics to a more attacking format, bounced back to take the remaining two games by 21/14 and 21/13.
Extra intense training by Mike Cain could not prevent him and his partner Chris Scutter from losing out to the A Team’s first pairing of Ashley Stokes and Kris Woods.  A determined Cain and Scutter went into the lead in the first game and looked well on their way to securing a surprise win. With reputations at stake, Woods and Stokes dug in and with tight net play and powerful smashing, recovered taking the game by 21/15. Showing their class, Woods and Stokes then dominated play in the second game, outgunning Cain and Scutter, by a clear 21/5.

Second Ladies saw the A Team’s pairing of Belinda Griffiths and Laura Parry facing the talented Tara Moorcroft and partner Heather Astley. This was without doubt the match of the afternoon with Griffiths and Parry fortunate to take the first game by 21/17. Moorcroft and Astley fought back in the second and with a dazzling display of ladies doubles just clinched the second game by 21/20. With all to play for in the third, the lead switched backwards and forwards between the two pairs; however Griffiths and Parry held their nerve and with less unforced errors they just edged out their opponents by 21/19.
