Sport RCT, in partnership with Disability Sport Wales, Badminton Wales and Llantrisant Leisure Centre, are launching a new Disability badminton session starting on 16th September.

Sport RCT, which is part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's Leisure Services Team, are dedicated to helping the population of RCT become healthier and active. They develop local, inclusive and safe sporting opportunities in partnership with facilities, sports clubs, community organisations, businesses, workplaces, schools and National Governing Bodies. They have put these partnerships to good use in making a disability badminton session available.

This disability badminton session is an outcome of the success of the current junior badminton session that runs at the leisure centre every Wednesday 7-8pm which was established after the success of the FREE multi sports sessions delivered before Christmas for 10 weeks. The children were offered the opportunity to participate in badminton, squash and short tennis.  Recognising that there was a demand for badminton, the junior session was set up in partnership with Sport RCT, Badminton Wales and Llantrisant Leisure Centre. The sessions started in January and have an average of 16 regular participants every week. The success of the session is a result of the hard work of Coach Kiri Evans and her volunteers alongside the support received from the Llantrisant Leisure Centre management and staff which has been fantastic.

They have supported the sessions by promoting the current junior sessions and accommodating the new disability session when the demand for a disability session arose.

Sport RCT and DSW have supported Kiri through developing her disability skills and knowledge by funding her Disability Inclusion Training course.

The details for the disability badminton session are as follows:

Start Date: 16th September 2015
Day: Wednesdays
Time: 8-9pm
Venue: Llantrisant Leisure Centre
Price: FREE to Leisure for Life Members / £3 per session for non-members

Eddie O'Neill commented,

“This is a welcome initiative with one of our key partners which reinforces the progress we have made this year in disability badminton. We have plans for hubs at Carmarthenshire and Deeside, all supported by the Para badminton group which we formed in partnership with Disability Sport Wales earlier this year."

If you would like to talk to someone about the session, please contact Shelley Jones, RCT Disability Sport Officer, on 07881268185.
