Shirley Cox

Badminton Wales is sad to announce that Mrs Shirley Cox, one of the more colourful stalwarts of badminton in the Gwent region, has passed away.

Shirley truly lived, breathed and slept the game and, fortunately for the Gwent region, passed this love of the game on to several future generations. She played in the old Gwent leagues for Girlings (New Inn) where matches would often last into the early hours in little village halls and social clubs with tea and cakes provided.

She continued to play well into her seventies for more recent teams such as Pontypool and Abersychan, but Shirley loved the kids and she was never happier than being on the court and running numerous clubs for them. She was also an avid spectator and would attend numerous shuttle tournaments and regional events around the country whatever the distance just to cheer them on and show her support and took great delight in promoting badminton whenever and to whomever.

Shirley made an outstanding contribution in promoting and coaching the next generation of badminton players in Wales and she will be greatly missed.

Shirley's funeral will be held at 10am on Monday 15th August at St. Matthew's Church, Pontymoile.

The family have asked all badminton friends to wear their club/county/badminton tops to the funeral. It is family flowers only with donations to ‘All Creatures Great & Small Animal Sanctuary’ in Cwmbran.
