More Junior Success From The Young Welsh Starlets!

While most of Wales were enjoying their relaxing Christmas break, a hardy bunch of Welsh Regional Academy athletes continued their hard work and at the start of the New Year produced so more fantastic results. With parents trekking up and down the length on Britain is support, Thomas Morgan headed off to the Webbar U17 Silver in Milton Keynes while Harper Leigh headed off to The Railway Institute in York for the Yorkshire U15 Silver.

A good start to the New Year for Thomas as he played in the Webber U17 Silver. Thomas started his group well with a win over Charlie Wu 15-12, 17-15 and followed it up with two more straight forward victories to win the group. The quarter final was a much tighter affair against the number 2 seed Imran Wadud from Surrey. Thomas came back from a game down to win 14-16, 15-7, 15-6 The semi-final against Toby Beckett was a more comfortable 15-4, 15-9. The final against Tom Nightingale was tight but a strong, positive performance, saw Thomas win 15-12, 15-13. Fine reward for Thomas after some good performances before Christmas and an excellent weekend for Newport Badminton Academy with Thomas’s victory being one of three gold medals.

Harper Leigh has continued his fine form on the back of two wins in with another dominant display in York. Producing strong performances in his group he continued his fantastic play with a comfortable 15-9 15-9 victory against no.3/4 seed Piyush Pradeep followed by an even more controlled display against no. 2 seed Salah Siraj winning 15-10 15-7.
But it was in the final where he showed his great composure and fitness against top seed Daniel Kemp. Despite losing the first set 9-15 he battled back to win 15-10 15-9 to take the title.

Well done to all and we are looking forward to seeing them all play in local events such as the Cardiff Gold 25/26 Jan and the Junior Nationals Feb 15/16.
