Matthew Hughes Appointed Performance Manager and National Coach

Badminton Wales are delighted to confirm the appointment of Matt Hughes as the new Performance Manager and National Coach for Badminton Wales for a 2 year period in the run up to the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in 2018.  For the last 8 years, Matt has worked as the High Performance Coach for Badminton Wales.  This role takes on a wider remit, setting the future direction for the sport and re-building a sustainable player pathway, aligned to the GB pathway, with the aim of systematic success for the sport leading to future Olympic and Commonwealth champions.

Matt had a prolific Badminton playing career, with over 100 caps for Wales, winning 8 International tournaments, competing at three Commonwealth games and having reached number 14 in the world in Mixed Doubles and 18 in Men’s Doubles. 
Since his move into coaching he has coached players at all the major team events, from Europeans to Worlds and the Commonwealth games in Delhi.  He successfully qualified 6 players for the most recent Commonwealth’s in Glasgow in 2014.  He is part of GB’s Talent ID and steering group, bringing this wealth of knowledge back to Wales to help put the systems in place to develop future talent.

On his appointment to the role Matt commented

Matt will formally commence the role as Performance Manager and National Coach on 1st June 2016.
