Gwent Development Project

Our South Wales Development Officer Angela Stevens has been working closely with the badminton clubs in the Gwent area. She has met with a number of clubs over the past couple of months to help them complete development plans in order to gain a better understanding of what each club can offer. These development plans will also set realistic aims and objectives tailored to each individual club, and Angela will assist them to achieve these.

After detailed discussions with the recently formed BW Pathway Group, one of Angela’s main aims for this year is to strengthen the links in the player pathway from participation to performance, ensuring the clubs have what they need to thrive and be sustainable. In order for this to take place, Angela is assisting in clubs in Gwent with community chest applications, club promotion, ‘ad-hoc’ training as well as training Young Leaders to run sessions. So far this month she has already met with five clubs (Newport, Oakdale, Abergavenny, Monnow and Ponthir), and has further meetings planned with another three in the area. Angela is also liaising with Chris and Alyson Pritchard of Gwent County Badminton Association in order to create stronger partnerships with the County, and as a result of this create stronger links and communication with their associated clubs.

As well as this, Angela has also created a partnership with Communities First who have lead free BME badminton sessions for Ladies and Girls as part of Newport’s development plan. Newport Live are also offering development opportunities for clubs through an 'Us Girls' event on the 28th, where clubs can run sessions throughout the day to gain potential new members. Newport Development

We are looking to develop a cohesive approach to all the positive work that is already going on in the region to ensure it links to a clear player pathway.  Once this approach has been trialed here, it will be reviewed before looking to be rolled out elsewhere in Wales
