On 15th May, Flintshire held its annual Festival of Youth Sport. Each of the 8 featured sports had a Commonwealth Games theme ahead of the games in Glasgow this year.

In the run up to the festival, all schools which had entered received a great package. BW kindly donated teachers packs containing session plans for Key Stage 1 and 2. The teachers involved were invited to a teacher training evening to give them the basic skills and knowledge required to deliver sessions. After this was completed, each school received four training sessions. Laura Price, Flintshire’s Badminton Development Officer, went into each school and completed sessions along with the primary staff.

Sessions were brilliant and all the children became extremely excited for the festival. In the school sessions 187 pupils received coaching. Flintshire gave each school a multi-sport net and badminton bag with rackets and shuttles to be able to continue playing.

On the festival day nine schools attended with 76 pupils taking part in the event. Schools had 7 stations and had to compete as a team to score as many points as possible. The day was a fantastic success with all pupils really enjoying the day. First place went to Venerable Edward Morgan Primary School in Shotton, second place went to Mynydd Isa Primary School and third claimed by Westwood Primary School in Buckley.

Flintshire’s BDO Laura Price received some great feedback from the teachers, with one teacher claiming, "My pupils have thoroughly enjoyed today and have gained some valuable skills.”
