First Gold for Aimee at the Carebaco International

We asked Welsh badminton player, Aimee Moran to tell us about her time in Carebaco last week, where she won her first ever Senior International Gold Medal...

"The Carebaco International tournament held in Aruba was one of the furthest tournaments I have travelled to. I was very impressed by the standard and the love of badminton expressed by all the players competing from at least 8 different Caribbean countries. Luckily I was able to get some practice on court with my scratch doubles partner from Aruba a few days before the tournament started, so I was able to get a good feel for the hall and the conditions I would be playing in.

My first game was against a Suriname player who had won the Under 19s local tournament the day before the Senior International. I fought hard to get a 2-1 sets win, being a great start to the tournament. In the Semi - Final I played a girl from Dominican Republic who had won the BWF Under 19 International tournament the previous week. I was really pleased with the way I performed in this match winning comfortably in 2 sets.

My opponent in the final was a very experienced player who had won this event several times and was a semi finalist of the Pan American Championships a few years ago. In the first game I played with great pace and determination winning 21-18 and entered the second game with good confidence, however she improved her style of play and it was a hard fight all the way to 19 - 19 where I kept focus high and came out on top to win the final 21-19.

It was a wonderful, friendly competitive tournament and one I will not forget as being my first Senior International win.

I would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported me to reach this goal."

Congratulations Aimee from all of us here at Badminton Wales. Keep up the good work!
