European Championships Day 1

Yesterday, Tuesday April 26th, saw the first day of competition take place at the European Championships 2016 in La Roche-sur-Yon, France where Daniel Font and Carissa Turner are both representing Wales.

Carissa Turner started off Wales's campaign in her Singles against Switzerland's, Sabrina Jaquet. Despite starting well things took a turn and Turner lost in straight sets 21-11, 21-11.
Carissa said; "It was a very disappointing performance for me. I played in the Swiss Club League Finals on the weekend and did well there so I was hoping to continue that form here but I couldn't get a good feeling in the stadium and I think the heavy weekend has taken it out of me a bit."

D&C court

But Turner couldn't dwell on her loss for long as she and Daniel had to take to the court later in the day against world no.47's David Obenosterer and Elisabeth Baldauf from Austria. They were the last match on the TV Court and ended up being the only match playing in the Vendeespace Stadium. The first set went to plan as they took it 21-16. All looked well in the second set, but despite leading by 4 points they lost their way and the Austrians took the game 21-15. The Welsh pair didn't start too well in the third set and had to come back after trailing by 3 points twice in the opening half. At the change of ends it was 10-11 but a good run of serves saw them take a 14-12 lead. They then broke away to a 17-13 lead but the Austrians fought hard to come back to 17-18. Despite feeling tense Daniel and Carissa kept their composure and took the final game to secure the match 21-17.

D&C win

The pair will now face world no.6 pair, Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen who were Runners Up at last months All England Championships on Thursday.

After the match Daniel said; " I wasn't sure how I would do with my leg injury but I managed to push through and   I'm very happy to have gotten through to the next round. It's going to be a really tough match but I'm looking forward to the challenge of facing the no.2 seeds "

D&C Smash

While the next Mixed Doubles round is not until Thursday 27th of April, Daniel will face Sweden's Henri Hurksainen tonight at 9:15pm local time.

Wales is not only being represented by the players out in France as Andrew Elias is there as the only Welsh Lines Judge. He enjoyed watching the Mixed Doubles match and thanks go to him for the pictures he took for us.
