The European Championships 2016 has come to an end for Wales with a loss in the last 16 of the Mixed Doubles for Daniel Font and Carissa Turner.

Last night they faced top Danish pair, Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen who are ranked 6th in the world. The Welsh pair who started playing together last summer but have not competed or trained together since September due to Daniels knee injury fought hard but the Danes experience was too much for them.

Performance Manager and National Coach, Matthew Hughes, travelled with the duo to France for the Championships. He said; “It has been a tough week for both Dan and Carissa in different ways, Dan has been nursing an injury he sustained at the Croatian Open a couple of weeks ago, however he showed good resilience in his singles and in particular his mixed by beating the Austrian pair Baldauf and Obernosterer ranked 47 in the world. Carissa was disappointed with her singles performance on Tuesday however again showed good character with Dan to take a much needed win in the mixed to set them up to face world number six pair and second seeds Fischer and Pedersen of Denmark. It proved to be a very tough game which was to be expected. Both players will be back in action and working on things learnt from this week for the Slovenian International in May.

It is vitally important for our players to be competing at this level it really does put in perspective where they are at in Europe. I’m hoping both players will take encouragement from their performances and look forward to a good summer training period ready for next season.”

Daniel and Carissa will next compete at the Slovenian International from May 12th – 15th along with Aimee Moran and Jordan Hart.
