Deeside Junior Shuttle Tournament 2015

Last weekend’s Deeside Shuttle tournament attracted players from Conwy, Cheshire and Shropshire. 

In the U11 boys singles semi’s Piyush Pradeep (Ch) beat Matthew Mammachan (Cy) 21-15 and Matthew Swash (Mold) beat Rahul Modha (CQ) 21-18. Swash demonstrated tremendous determination and speed to win the final 17-15,15-8. Mammachan and Nanda Shanmugasigamani (Cy) won the very close doubles final 17-15,15-13 against Modha and Joshua Ellwood (CQ). The girls events were an all Cheshire affair. Nithikka Kumar beat Anushka Acharya 21-11 in the singles and in the doubles Acharya and Anushka Salvi beat Ella Nealey and Charlotte Williams 21-8,21-14.


Joe Casey (Mold) did brilliantly to overcome Isaac Lof (Cy) 23-21 in his U13 boys singles semi; Castell Alun’s Nathan Troake won his more easily beating Ethan Kaye (Ch) 21-13. Casey won the final 15-6,15-10 displaying great control and consistency. Casey and Kaye won the doubles against Troake and Joel Buchanan (CA) 21-18. In the girls singles semis Jess Ding (Mold) won a tight game against Urvi Modha (CQ) 21-18 and Tia Ward (Shropshire) beat Aarthy Aravind (Ch) 21-14. Ward dominated in the final winning 15-6,15-6. Ward and Modha beat Aravind and Kumar to win the doubles 21-16.


16 entered the U15 boys singles and provided some great play and close games. In the quarters James Spendlove (Mold) beat Ben Somerville (Shr) 21-11, Will Casey (Mold) won a cliffhanger against Alfie Moorcroft (Flint) 22-20, Charlie Cahill (CQ) beat Harvey Jones (Buckley) 21-13, and Dan Roberts (CQ) beat Dan Hilditch (Mold) 21-6. In the semis Spendlove beat Casey 21-6 and Cahill beat Roberts 21-10.The final was fiercely contested with Spendlove just winning 15-6,18-16. Mold’s Lily Hird had to play at her best to beat Carys Jones (Llanferres) 21-16 in the girls final. Hird and Jones combined well to win the doubles 15-7,15-8 against Smruthya Ganeshram (CQ) and Sophie Green (Cy).


There was a small boys U17 entry but the singles group competition was close. Both Thomas Bowen (Shr) and Rees Thomas (Mold) were equal on points having won 3 games and lost 1; Thomas beat Bowen in their game but Bowen became champion having conceded fewer points overall!
