Day 2 of the 2013 Yonex Welsh International

Day 2 of the 2013 Yonex Welsh International Championships proved to be as exciting as it promised with some stunning victories and some shock exits.

First up was the men’s singles 3rd qualifying round with Jacob Nilsson (SWE), Kasper Lehikoinen (FIN), Anatoliy Yartsev (RUS), Alex Marritt (ENG), Kian Andersen (DEN), Matthias Almer (AUT), Gordon Thomson (SCO) and Ben Beckman (ENG) moving forward.

Onto the round of 32, where there were some hard fought rallies and close matches.  In the men’s singles, 5th seed Kwong Beng Chan (MAS) and 7th seed Kieran Merrilees (SCO) lost their matches to Jarolim Vicen (SVK) and Rhys Walker (ENG) respectively. Other highlights were Jacob Bitman (CZE) against Anton Ivanov (RUS) and Christian Lind Thomsen (DEN) against Jacob Nilsson (SWE) with Ivanov and Thomsen triumphing and moving into the round of 16. Dan Font (WAL) was unable to progress to the last 16 being beaten by qualifier Gordon Thomson (SCO) 15-21, 17-21.

In the ladies singles, 6th seed Olga Golovanova (RUS) was knocked out by Michelle Chan Ky (NZL) but all the other seeds progressed to the round of 16. The outstanding match of the round was No. 1 seed Beatriz Corrales (ESP) against Ella Diehl (RUS). After 3 extremely close sets, the No1 seed claimed her place in the next round. Wales’ Carissa Turner beat Alice Wu (AUS) earning her place in the last 16.

In the Men’s doubles, seeds Peter Briggs and Harley Towler (ENG) and Joe Morgan and Nic Strange (WAL) were knocked out by Pak Chuu Chow and Bin Shen Tan (MAS) and Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh (SCO) respectively. One of the stand out matches was between the Russian pair of Andrej Ashmarin and Vitalij Durkin and Daniel Benz (GER) and Kwong Beng Chan (MAS) with German/Malaysian pair claiming victory after 3 exciting sets. Wales’ Dan Font with Scottish partner Michael Campbell beat Martin Drabble and Nick Hodgson (ENG) to progress to the next round.

Shock of the round in the ladies doubles was the defeat of No1 seeds Eva Lee and Paula Lynn Obanana (USA) by Chloe Birch and Alyssa Lim (ENG).  4th seeds Anna Rankin and Madeline Stapleton were beaten by unseeded Kirsty Gilmour and Imogen Bankier (SCO) but all other seeds moved safely into the next round. Welsh duo Sarah Thomas and Carissa Turner fought back in the 3rd set  from 16-20 down to beat Ira Banerjee and Jessica Pugh (ENG) 26-24 to move on to the last 16.

All the seeds moved safely into the next round in the mixed doubles with the prominent match being between Oliver Baczala and Victoria Williams (ENG) who went down narrowly to Russia’s Rodion Kargaev and Anatasia Chervaykova in 3 close sets. Wales’ Aimee Moran and England’s Conor Bambrick were unable to continue their success of the previous day losing to Chris Coles and Alyssa Lim (ENG). Welsh pair Dan Font and Sarah Thomas lost to Russia’s Anatoliy Yartsev and Evgeniya Kosetskaya 21-15, 21-14.

Onto Day 3 and the rounds of 16 and 8 with many more exciting encounters anticipated.
