Commonwealth Games Update

Yesterday proved to be the tough day anticipated for the Welsh pairing of Turner and Thomas. With both girls carrying injury niggles Turner had to contend with Kiwi running machine Michelle Chan who , unlike Turner had been focusing only on singles at the event. In truth Turner played very well but could not match the energy of the 6th seeded Kiwi player who won in two straight games The big challenge came later when the Welsh duo again played the Canadian pairing of Bruce and Chan. Having beaten them in the team event, hopes were high that they could do so again and indeed at 20-18 in the first game, prospects were good. Sadly the duo could not convert their advantage and looked weary in the second game which they lost to 13. Nevertheless a great games for the South Wales pairing who had to double up in all of the team matches as well as playing two events in the individuals. Both of them drew praise from the TV commentators for their efforts and quality throughout the  event.

On the plus side Daniel Font and Oliver Gwilt had a night off when their New Zealand opponents withdrew due to illness. Gwilt and Font had beaten the Kiwi pairing previously so were in any case optimistic. They will now play top seeds Adcock and Ellis in the quarter finals in a match which will present an opportunity to showcase their qualities as a doubles pair.
