Changes to Age Groups on the Junior Circuit

On 1 January 2016, Badminton Europe changed their rules for determining International Junior age groups so that Europe falls in line with the rest of the World.

As a consequence of this decision made by Badminton Europe, Badminton Wales has reviewed the domestic age group regulations and we will be changing from 1 August 2016 for ALL Badminton Wales events, including all sanctioned events, i.e. Junior Open and Shuttle to fall inline with Badminton Europe.  Age groups categories will remain as U11, U13, U15, U17, U19 but eligibility for those age groups will change.

Due to how the age group eligibility will effect some players at the Yonex Welsh Junior Nationals, an additional Nationals will be taking place on 10th-11th September at USW Sports Park following the current criteria. Please keep checking our website for further details on this as they are released.

Changing our age groups will raise the overall standard in the future, as players will move up an age group giving them the opportunity to access more competitive competition. Players will be better placed to compete internationally, reach senior level earlier and may help reduce the current standard gap between junior and senior transition. If we do not follow this recommendation, our players will have to play in a higher international age group compared to their domestic age group for half of each year, leaving our players at a vast disadvantage.
