Cardiff 5x60 2013

Yesterday, the biggest ever Cardiff 5 x 60 badminton competition was held at Talybont Leisure Centre (Cardiff University) with 165 children taking part.  A record number of 10 schools entered - Bishop of Llandaff, Ysgol Bro Edeyrn, Cardiff High, Fitzalan High, Ysgol Glantaf, Mary Immaculate High, Ysgol Plasmawr, St Illtyd High, St Teilo’s High, and Whitchurch High.  A total of 37 teams participated in the competition: year 7 and 8 boys with 13 teams, year 7 and 8 girls with 5 teams, year 9 and 10 boys with 12 teams and year 9 and 10 girls with 7 teams. The event also saw the first ever disability badminton competition and also a disability skills session with 17 participants.
The day was supported by 15 volunteers from Cardiff and Vale College without whom the day would have been impossible to run as they were responsible for umpiring all of the 66 games played.  The Cardiff 5 x 60 officers also played an invaluable part noting results and organising the fixtures of the 4 separate competitions making the event run as smoothly as possibly.

The first inclusive badminton competition element consisted of a singles and doubles competition.  The matches were played to an excellent standard with all participants enjoying the competitiveness.  The doubles matches were very close with Billy from St Teilo’s and Abakor from Whitchurch coming runners up to the winners Joe and Claurynder from Bishop of Llandaff’s Marion Centre.  The singles was also very exciting and very close with Abakor and Chid taking joint third place, Brendon from Whitchurch taking second place and Jack McGrath triumphantly winning the competition.  Running alongside the inclusive competition was a skills session where players were coached and took part in some fun activities.

In the 5 x 60 events, each team of 4 players played 2 singles matches and 3 doubles matches within a group.  An excellent standard was played throughout with many of the games going to setting.  The runners up from the year 7 and 8 girls’ competition were Ysgol Bro Edeyrn and the winning team were from Cardiff High.  In the year 7 and 8 boys’ competition Glantaf B team took the runner up position with Cardiff High and Glantaf A taking joint first place.

In the year 9 and 10 girls’ competition the runners up were Plasmawr A with Whitchurch High taking first place.  In the year 9 and 10 boys’ competition St Teilo’s took the runner up position to Bishop of Llandaff who took first place.  The winners of each competition will now go through to play in the regional event in the new year.

This competition has gone from strength to strength with a record number of schools taking part.  It was an excellent afternoon of badminton and a pleasure to see so many young people taking part.
