The BW Senior Satellite took place at Cardiff Met’s new Archers Arena on Saturday 22 April. 43 players entered the tournament which saw Mens Singles, Womens Single, Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles played throughout the day.

Only one seed made it through the group stages of the Mens Singles which had 12 entries. In the Quarter Finals, William Lo faced Darius Garnham and won in two sets, 21-17/21-15. Michael Pritchard also had a comfortable win over Simon Pill in his Quarter Final, 21-10/21-4.
Top seed, Victor Pang then faced William Lo in the one Semi Final and while the first set was close at 21-17, Victor then showed his fitness by picking up the pace in the second set to win 21-5. Michael Pritchard and Adit Patel had a thrilling, dogged battle in their Semi Final. Michael took the first set 21-13 but failed to convert a 2 match points in the second set and narrowly lost 21-23. The third set went point for point initially, but Adit managed to gain a small lead but this time it was Michael who saved 2 match points and managed to advance to the Final by winning the third set 23-21.
The Final would be a test of mental strength for Michael after having such a tough Semi Final. The 15-year-old showed incredible professionalism as he had his best performance of the day against a strong and quick Victor Pang. Both players remained focused and patient during their numerous long rallies. After 33 minutes of battling it was Victor who won 21-17/21-17.

The Womens Singles consisted of one group of 3 players; Lowri Hart, Izzy Lewis and Tracy Chang. The first match between Izzy and Tracy was a nail biting, physical match which Tracy eventually won 21-13/15-21/22-20. Lowri had a slightly easier time in the first set against Izzy winning comfortably, 21-11. Izzy came back fighting in the second set but Lowri dug deep and held her nerve to win 27-25.
Tracy and Lowri had a competitive game with plenty of long rallies and some great sportsmanship. Despite this being Lowri’s first Senior Satellite event, she remained calm under pressure and took the win 21-19/21-14.

The Mens Doubles was the most competitive event of the day with some fantastic matches played from the group stages right through to the Final. Scott Oates & Morgan Manwaring beat Michael Pritchard & Dafydd Price in setting in the third to secure a place in the Quarter Finals against Shahab Ali & Adit Patel. The Cardiff Met students had to dig deep as they lost the first set 13-21 and won the second 21-15. The third set went point for point but in the end, it was Scott & Morgan who came out trumps winning 21-19 to advance to the Semi Finals. The other Quarter Final, Henry Wong & Larson Tan played Barry Garnham & Victor Pang. While the first set was close, Henry & Larson took an early lead in the second and won 21-19/21-16.
Both Semi Finals were quite straight forward and one sided as ex-junior Welsh squad pair, Gareth Cox & Rhys Pritchard took on Scott Oates & Morgan Manwaring and Gareth Day & Andrew Jones played Henry Wong & Larson Tan. Gareth & Rhys continued to dominate by winning 21-10/21-13 and Gareth & Andrew managed to hold their nerve in the second set of their match to win 21-13/21-19. The Final was Cox & Pritchard’s most difficult match of the day and featured several quick exchanges, brick-wall like defence and powerful attacking play! In the end, it was Cox & Pritchard who came out on top winning 21-19/21-17.

The Mixed Doubles concluded the day and was exciting from the get go. Larson Tan & Tracy Chang topped their group beating the top seeds Scott Oates & Izzy Lewis in setting in the third. While the top two of the second group was decided on points for and against as three pairs had won equal number of matches. Darius Garnham & Lowri Hart face Scott Oates & Izzy Lewis in the Semi Finals and despite having a tight game in the first set Oates & Lewis change of tactic saw them win more comfortably in the second, 23-21/21-11. USW students Larson Tan & Tracy Chang took on Andy Gibbons & Sammy Hutt who performed well earlier this year at the Yonex Welsh Nationals. However, after a tough group stage, Andy & Sammy couldn’t produce as they lost 13-21/17-21.
The Final saw a chance for Scott Oates & Izzy Lewis to seek revenge against Larson Tan & Tracy Chang for the group stage match. The first game was neck and neck but the USW students managed to take it 22-20. In the second set Scott & Izzy did well to come back from being 13-17 down to even the score. The game went point for point with nerves beginning to show from all four players. In the end Larson & Tracy played the rallies out and took the set and match 28-26.

A big thank you goes to the officials who helped throughout the day; Simon Ewins and Pei Xuan Mo and also to all those who supported the event.
