Jack Wilson made his debut on the International stage this weekend at the Carlton Irish Para-Badminton International 2015 and came away with a bronze medal.

Wilson, who competes in the SU5 category, competed in both the Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles.

In the singles, Wilson had a tough group in the form of second seed Wei Ming Tay (Singapore) and Frank Dietel (Germany).

Against Dietel, Wilson took the first game 21-17 but couldn’t capitalise on his initial success and lost the next 2 games 21-12, 21-11. Later on in the afternoon, Wilson took to the court against No.2 seed Wei Ming Tay. Unfortunately Wilson could not find the answers to Wei Ming Tay’s style of play and lost in two sets. Wei Ming Tay went on gain a place in the final against No 1 seed Bartłomiej Mroz (Poland), losing in 2 sets 23-21, 23-21.

The following day Wilson joined forces with Ireland’s Owen Casey for the Men’s Doubles event.

In their group, they were to face Wilson’s adversary from the singles Wei Ming Tay, who was partnered with Colin Kerouanton (France) and gained the No.2 seeding, and Germany’s Nils Boning and partner Mark Waller of England.

Wei Ming Tay and Kerouanton proved too strong for the scratch paring of Wilson and Casey winning the encounter in two straight sets. It was a different story however against Boning and Waller with Wilson and Casey winning in 2 sets 21-19, 21-13 earning themselves a place in the quarter finals.

In the quarter finals, Wilson and Casey faced Eduardo Oliveira (Brazil) and Jonas Thiel (Germany). The Celtic pairing dominated the encounter winning in 2 sets 21-13, 21-18.

In the semi-finals, Wilson and Casey were set to play the no 1 seeds  Bartłomiej Mroz (Poland) and Ilker Tuzcu (Turkey). Unfortunately the seeds were just too strong and claimed victory in 2 sets leaving Wilson and Casey with a bronze medal.

Wilson says of his experience,
‘I thought it was a great tournament to make my international debut. I’m not too happy with not getting out of my singles group but getting to a semi-final in the doubles and receiving any type of medal makes it a successful tournament for me.
