Following on from a successful local BME tournament last June, the BME Badminton Association decided to hold another BME tournament this year but this time they opened up the entry to the UK.

In June 2014, following on from 6 weeks of free badminton training sessions which were supported by Badminton Wales and Communities First, the first BME badminton tournament was held at Pill Millennium Centre, Newport. After the event, the BME Badminton Association was formed with the help of Shajan Miah, BME Community Development Officer, and Angela Stevens, Badminton Development Officer for South Wales.

The tournament consisted of group stages, quarter finals, semi-finals and finals. All games were played to a very high standard. The semi-final stage proved to be exciting as the quality of play was very high and the games were very close. The final game was extremely tense with a closely contested match but Akik and Malek from Birmingham claimed the victory with Fazrul and Misba from Newport taking the runner-up spot. The winners received a trophy and £150 in prize money, the runners-up received a trophy and £100 in prize money and third place received a trophy and £50 in prize money.

Shajan Miah, BME Development Officer, commented,

“Communities First and Badminton Wales have supported this group of individuals who have come together to form this BME Badminton Association. They have now become a constituted badminton club, affiliated to Badminton Wales. This year they have gone ahead and organised a UK wide tournament which demonstrates how successful they have become.

Well done to the Association for all their hard work as the tournament was a great success."
