Note from Sue Maughan the Interim General Manager

Following my introductory email I’ve now been in post for over a month and I thought it would be useful to provide a brief update on what’s been happening and what the staff at Badminton Wales have been up to.

From my perspective, the first couple of weeks were taken up with submitting a funding bid to Sport Wales and completing the required processes stipulated by our key funding partners.  This included an online governance assurance site, demonstrating that the organisation is compliant across a number of areas including governance, strategic planning, financial management, human resources, organisational policies, risk management and that we meet the necessary legal requirements. In terms of our funding submission we won’t get confirmation of funding for next year until after the Sport Wales Board in February. In terms of self-assurance we will have feedback on any actions required in the New Year.

We held a Board meeting in early November with key areas under discussion including the funding submission, updates from GB Board and approval and sign off on both the Child Protection Policies and the 2014/15 BW accounts.  There was also a discussion around driving Performance forwards and you’re probably aware that the Board supported a recommendation to make Matt Hughes the Interim Performance Lead for Badminton Wales on a part time basis until 31st March 2016.  Decisions on what will be put in place in the longer term will be made post our funding decision when we set new budgets.

In the short term Matt will be making some changes to how the HPC / DG sessions are run to ensure they create the right performance environment for performance players. Some approaches will be piloted within the coming weeks and then reviewed ready for the start of 2016.  Engagement has already taken place with the coaches who deliver the programmes and plans are currently under discussion to hold a meeting with parents prior to Christmas to encourage input to the future direction and provide updates on changes made to date. We will be looking to engage more regularly across a number of areas going forwards. We appreciate during the time of transition there have been some challenges and frustrations experienced by players, parents, coaches  etc but the ultimate aim of the staff is to move Badminton Wales forwards and raise the bar in terms of a performance culture.  New processes will be documented and put in place for areas such as selections so there is greater clarity going forwards.

In terms of Development, Angela has been busy over the past couple of months running Top School Competitions and 5x60 competitions to engage more young people in the sport.  Similarly in N Wales Steph has been engaging with people to get them involved in the sport.

On the events front, last week saw a very successful Welsh International take place at Sport Wales National Centre with  around 200 players from 30 countries (including entries from the world’s top 40) taking part including 10 Welsh players including Commonwealth Games athletes Oliver Gwilt and Carissa Turner alongside senior internationals Aimee Moran and Jordan Hart.  Thanks to the team of Lucie, Angela and Rob for all their hard work in making this event a great success as well as the umpire team and the volunteers who pitched in to help.

In the office you’re probably aware there have been some staffing changes with Laura Morgan leaving the organisation and Lucie Gwilt stepping into this role.  Taking Lucie’s place as Events Officer will be Carissa Turner who will be starting the role in the next couple of weeks.

I appreciate there are many members of the Badminton Wales family that I haven’t personally been able to engage with but I am slowly trying to meet with people, and have already met some coaches across N Wales and have more meetings planned.  The date of the AGM has been agreed as Sunday 31st January and as usual there will be the opportunity to engage in an open forum prior to the formal meeting.
