Recently, Badminton Wales was contacted by the National Trust about an exciting partnership centred around Newton House at Dinefwr Park, Carmarthenshire.

There is an existing partnership between Sport Wales and the National Trust called ‘Let the Outdoors Move You’ which aims to get more people enjoying the outdoors by regularly participating in sport and physical activity on and around National Trust properties. This offers people new experiences and places to be active where they can try sporting activities in a safe environment.

When the National Trust contacted Badminton Wales about holding badminton sessions at Dinefwr, there was a little bit of a twist. Whilst the National Trust wanted to hold badminton sessions in the grounds they also wanted to hold badminton sessions in the dining room of Newton House as there is evidence that the family who had lived there would have played badminton in the dining room when the weather was too bad to play outside. We at Badminton Wales thought it was a great way to recreate social history and also to promote our sport and being active; we were delighted for the opportunity to get on board with such an innovative project.

The first of the sessions was on 21st July and the badminton court was busy all day.

Angela Stevens, Badminton Development Officer for South Wales, said,

“Delivering badminton at a National Trust property such as Newton House is an exciting opportunity for us to engage with people and families that may not have played badminton before.  It gives us the opportunity to showcase badminton as the fun family game it is.  We have a variety of equipment that allows everyone to participate from a 2 year old up to 80 plus.  We also have an outdoor badminton area where visitors can just have a go.  I am now looking forward to my next session which will be on the 28th July from 11am-3pm.”

The sessions were well received by visitors with one parent commenting,

"My youngest daughter never participates in any sport but today we played badminton when we arrived, then after touring the house she asked if we could go back and play more badminton because she really enjoyed it.  It’s great because it’s something that we can do as a family.  I am now going to go and book a court at our local leisure centre in Carmarthen so that we can all go and play badminton together."

Laura Edwards, National Trust Sports Partnership Manager, Wales commented,

“It is great to be working with Badminton Wales as part of our new Sports Partnership project – ‘Let the Outdoors Move You’  which is all about getting more people active in our beautiful open spaces. By working with Badminton Wales it has been possible to offer visitors to Dinefwr Park a new and exciting opportunity to try badminton in the unique surroundings that Dinefwr Park has to offer. It is fantastic to see families and people of all ages and abilities picking up a badminton racket, getting active and enjoying themselves - it really has allowed us to offer something new at this property that has never been done before.”

The indoor badminton sessions will be held on the following dates:

  • 28th July
  • 11th August

The outdoor badminton sessions will be held in the grounds throughout the summer.
