2018 Deeside Senior Gold Tournament

There was an excellent entry in the 2018 Deeside Senior Gold not only from North, South and West Wales, but also from Wirral, Cheshire and Lancashire and competition was fierce with many matches going to 3.

17 men competed in the singles groups. In the Elimination rounds Tomos Sudder beat Matthew Riley 15-10, 15-12 and Jamie Noble beat Mike Pritchard 15-14, 15-8. In the quarters Noble pushed Luke Tanner all the way just losing 15-6, 5-15, 14-16; Ben Woodward beat Stuart Mears 15-11, 15-8; Syed Masood beat Kai Tok Hung 15-12, 15-11; Sudder had a great win against Joe Cottrill 15-9, 15-7. In the semis Tanner beat Woodward 15-10, 15-11 and Masood survived a first game loss to Sudder 13-15 before winning 15-5, 15-7. The final was a cliffhanger; Masood took Gold 8-15,15-8, 15-11, proving just too steady and accurate for Tanner.

5 entered the Womens singles group; there were no “veteran” entries but the standard of the juniors was impressive. Alicia Adams deservedly won Gold winning all 4 matches convincingly. Zoe Raiswell took Silver winning 3 matches and played very well when under pressure.

In the Men's doubles 9 pairs played in groups of 3. 5 of the matches went to 3. In the quarters; Cottrill/Tanner were stretched to beat Ben/Joe Travers 15-12, 17-15 and Phill Eastwood/Iain Lovatt beat Riley/Woodward in a thriller 15-10,13-15,19-17. In the semis Cottrill/Tanner beat Andre Cardoso/Masood 15-13,15-7 and Eastwood/Lovatt won a much harder battle against Hung/Marco Wang 12-15, 16-14, 15-12. Cottrill/Tanner dominated the final 15-6,15-13 to win Gold.

Deeside Mens Doubles

5 pairs entered the Womens doubles. Georgia Hughes/Sammy Hutt played with great skill and tremendous speed and energy to win all 4 matches to take Gold but were taken to 3 by Adams/Raiswell (Silver) winning 11-15, 15-7, 15-10.

Deeside Womens Doubles

11 pairs entered the Mixed doubles and 7 of the group matches went to 3. In the quarters Tanner/Carla White beat B Travers/Tara Moorcroft 15-7, 15-10 and Wang/Carys Jones beat Lovatt/Raiswell 15-11, 15-11. In the semis Eastwood/Hughes narrowly beat Tanner/White 9-15, 15-6, 15-12 and Mears/Adams beat Wang/Jones 15-8, 15-12. Eastwood/Hughes played with great power and dominated to take Gold 15-7, 15-5; Mears and Adams never gave up but were clearly tired having started singles at 9.30am!
