2017 Yonex Welsh International - Day 2

Day 2 of the Yonex Welsh International and the 3rd qualifying round of the Men’s Singles followed by the 1st round of the main draw in all 5 disciplines.

In the Women’s Singles, Welsh hope and No 3 seed, Jordan Hart (pictured above), went through after victory over Ireland’s Rachael Darragh 21-14, 21-13 and will now meet England’s Emily Beach for a place in the quarter finals.  All but one of the seeds progressed to the round of 16, the exception being Switzerland’s Ronja Stern who unfortunately had to retire in the 1st set from her match against England’s Christen Elizabeth Marritt. Top seed, India’s Tanvi Lad, had a comfortable win against Norway’s Marlene Waland and No 2 seed, England’s Georgina Bland, had a 2 set win over another Norwegian, Emilie Hamang.

In the Men’s Singles, seven of the eight 3rd round qualifiers further progressed into the round of 16. England’s Johnnie Torjussen (pictured above) continued his impressive form with victories over Poland’s Mateusz Swierczynski and England’s Heng Lin Ngan and he will now play No 1 seed Sam Parsons (pictured below) who beat Slovenia’s Andraz Krapez in 2 sets. No 2 seed, Scotland’s Matthew Carder was knocked out by France’s Leo Rossi, losing 21-19 in the deciding set. No 7 seed, Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen, continued his good form with victory over England’s Joel Douse and will now face qualifier Adrian Dziolko from Poland.

In contrast to the Men’s and Women’s Singles, only 4 of the seeded pairs went through to the round of 16 in the Men's Doubles. Top seeds, Slovenia’s Miha Ivanic & Andraz Krapez were surprisingly beaten in 3 close sets by Polish qualifiers Pawel Smilowski & Przemyslaw Syzdlowski (pictured below), who will now play fellow qualifiers, Denmark’s Emil Lauritzen & Mads Muurholm. No 2 seeds, France’s Eloi Adam & Samy Corvee were comfortable winners against England’s Jed Arksey & David Robertson and the 3rd and 4th seeded Irish pairings of Nhat Nguyen & Paul Reynolds and Mark Brady & Ciaran Chambers, both advanced with 2 set victories. 

HP Banner - Polish Doubles Pairing

In the Women’s Doubles England’s Evie Burbidge & Elizabeth McMorrow enjoyed a great victory over No 1 seeds, Germany’s Lisa Kaminski & Hannah Pohl, winning in 2 sets, 22-20, 21-16 and will now face the fellow English pairing of Kimberly Helen Clague & Christen Elizabeth Marritt . Belgium’s Lise Jaques & Flore Vandenhoucke, seeded 2, progressed after beating the Swiss pairing of Celine Dagelet & Chantal Von Rotz and will now play qualifiers, Denmark’s Cille Nielsen & Jenni Olsen.  The 3rd seeds, Norway’s Solvar Flaten Jorgensen & Natalie Syvertsen, were put out by England’s Jess Hopton & Atu Rosalina but 4th seeds, Ireland’s Sara Boyle & Rachael Darragh, progressed safely through.

Top seeds in the Mixed Doubles, Norway’s Fredrik Kristensen & Solvar Flaten Jorgensen, came away with victory in a 3 setter against England’s Harry Arksey & Nicola Gresty but the 2nd seeds, Poland’s Pawel Smilowski & Magdalena Swierczynska were eliminated by England’s Oliver Baczala & Natasha Lado, 22-20, 19-21, 15-21. Ireland’s Ciaran & Sinead Chambers, seeded 4, advanced in 2 sets and, also hoping to mount a challenge are qualifiers, England’s Michael Roe & Jess Hopton, who came through in 3 sets against Scotland’s Jack McGregor and Toni Woods.

Up today are the round of 16 and the quarter finals and Welsh fans will be hoping that Jordan Hart can progress through to the semi-finals tomorrow.
