2017 Yonex Welsh International - Day 1

Day 1 at the 2017 Yonex Welsh International at Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff and the qualifying rounds of the competition.

Wales’ Will Kitching was unable to get past Belgium’s Rowan Scheurkogel in the 1st qualifying round of the Men’s Singles going down 15-21, 12-21. Andrew Oates (pictured below) suffered the same fate against Ireland’s Jonathan Dolan losing in 2 sets, 14-21, 19-21. Dolan then went on to have an epic struggle against Switzerland’s Julien Scheiwiller before coming through 28-26 in the 3rd set. Other names progressing to today’s 3rd qualifying round with the main draw in sight are England’s Luke Pearce and Johnnie Torjussen, Poland’s Adrian Dziolko, Denmark’s Soren Hald (pictured above)and India’s R.M.V Gurusaidutt.

In the Women’s Singles Germany’s Alicia Molitor, Theresa Isenberg and Annalena Diks all progressed. Scotland’s Toni Woods had a real fight in the 1st qualifying round against England’s Rosemary Allen eventually winning 24-22 in the 3rd set before easing through more comfortably in the next round. Joining them in the main draw are Denmark’s Anna Bygum and Signe Schulz, England’s Alexandra Oprisan and Sweden’s Berfin Aslan.

In the Men’s Doubles the Welsh pairing of Gareth Cox & Scott Oates put up a good fight against Denmark’s Oliver Lee Nowak & Jeppe Theisen before going down in 2 sets 21-23, 18-21. The Danes will be joined in the main draw by fellow Danes, Emil Lauritzen & Mads Muurholm, 3 English pairs, Samuel Owens & Jamie Robertson, Jed Arksey & David Robertson and Daniel Leers & Sam Lyle, Sweden’s Alex Luong & Filip Svensson, Luxembourg’s Mathias Sonderskov & Juno Thomas and the Polish pairing of Pawel Smilowski and Przemyslaw Szydlowski who had a walkover. Leers & Lyle had a tough 3 setter against another English pairing Toby Leung & Ethan Rose (20-22, 21-12, 21-19) before finally coming through.

In the Women’s Doubles the English pairing of Ka Kei Chien & Serena Midha and Denmark’s Cille Nielsen & Jenni Olsen advanced into the main draw with both winning tight 2 set matches in the 2nd qualifying round. Chien & Midha will now meet fellow English pair Jessica Li & Emily Robinson and Nielsen & Olsen will match up against another English pair Zoe King & Grace Taylor.

In the Mixed Doubles England’s Michael Roe & Jess Hopton eased through against compatriots Matthew Howcroft & Megan Channon. The Danish pairing of Oliver Thomsen & Rikke Pedersen had the closest match of the round before coming through in 2 sets (22-20, 21-19) against England’s Nathan Rossiter and Emily Robinson. The Anglo-Welsh pairing of James Ellaway & Chloe Le Tissier were paired against England’s William Jones & Lydia Ip hoping to move into the main draw but went down in 2 sets, 14-21, 14-21.

Today sees the 3rd qualifying round of the Men’s Singles followed by the 1st round of the main draw in all 5 disciplines and we look forward to many more exciting matches. In the Women’s Singles Welsh hopes rest with Jordan Hart, seeded 3 in the event, who meets Ireland’s Rachael Darragh.
