2016 Deganwy Junior Open

31 juniors contested the 18th Great Orme Junior Open last weekend in what was an excellent weekend of badminton.

In the U-13 event two girls entered and were put into the boys' singles to give them two/three games before they played their girls' singles final.  In the singles event were three U-11 players playing up an age group and all three were little “pocket rockets’. The girls' final was won by Iona Muir (Scotland) who beat Anushka Salvi (Cheshire) with both girls playing very good badminton. Iona, one of the  “pocket rockets”, combined speed with stroke production to beat another “pocket rocket”  Anushka, who had previously beaten two boys. Well done to both girls. The third "pocket rocket” although not winning a match was an inspiration to all who watched him move around the court fully committed and he was Eli Owen (Pembrokeshire). The U-13 boys' semi-finals were between Piyush Pradeep (Cheshire) and Nandakishor Shanmugasigamani (Conwy) with Piyush winning and Matthew Swash (N.E.Wales) beating Matthew Mammachan (N.E.Wales) Piyush & Matthew Swash then teamed up to beat Matthew Mammachan & Nandakishor in the U-13 Boys' Doubles.

The U-15 Boys' Singles saw the 1st semi-final between Oliver Harrington (Cheshire) and Liam Hird (N.E.Wales) with Liam winning. The 2nd semi-final was between Charlie Cahill (N.E.Wales) & Alfie Moorcroft (N.E.Wales) with Alfie winning. The final was won by Alfie Moorcroft. The U-17 Girls' Singles semi-finals were between Abi Cottrill (Conwy) and Carys Jones (N.E.Wales) with Abi winning and Katelyn Harrington (Cheshire) beating Jasmine Owen (Pembrokeshire). Katelyn reversed the result of their last match winning the final. Abi & Katelyn then teamed up to win the doubles beating Carys Jones and Freya Cottrill (Conwy). Shamanth Moodalbyle (N.E.Wales) won the U-17 Boys' Singles beating James Spendlove (N.E.Wales) in the final. Daniel Roberts and Daniel Hilditch (both N.E.Wales) reached the semi-finals. James and Shamanth then won the doubles beating Daniel & Daniel in the final. The mixed gave Shamanth his 3rd title when he played with Abi Cottrill (Conwy) to beat James Spendlove & Lily Hird in the final.

Thanks go to all players for the way they conducted themselves on and off the court, to all parents and to David Shore for his match control and in umpiring all the finals.
