2015 Yonex Welsh International - Finals Day

Saturday and Finals Day at the 2015 Yonex Welsh International. 

In the Mixed Doubles final, the no.1 seeds France’s Ronan Labar & Emilie Lefel met no.8 seeds England’s Matt Nottingham & Emily Westwood, the French pair having defeated no.6 seeds England’s Greg Mairs & Jenny Moore in 2 sets and the English pair having overcome no. 5 seeds Australia’s Sawan Serasinghe & Setyana Mapasa also in 2 sets in the semis. Nottingham & Westwood took the first set 21-13 and had built up a sizeable lead towards the end of the 2nd set but were pegged back by the French pair to take the game into setting at 20-20. However the English pair finally prevailed, taking the set 25-23 to claim the title.

In the Women’s Singles final, last week’s losing semi-finalist in the Scottish Grand Prix, Denmark’s Anna Thea Madsen faced no.2 seed Germany’s Karin Schnaase. Madsen had earlier beaten no.4 seed Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva 21-16, 21-15 in the semis and Schnaase was victorious against Chinese Taipei’s unseeded Chia Hsin Lee in 3 sets 21-16, 17-21, 21-9. The 1st set of the final was a close affair with Madsen just edging it 24-22. The 2nd set started in the same fashion with Madsen just ahead 11-9 at the break. However, on the resumption, Madsen quickly moved further ahead to close out the set 21-11 and take the title.

In the Men’s Singles final, no. 1 seed Russia’s Vladimir Malkov was pitched against Poland’s unseeded Adrian Dziolko, Malkov having beaten no. 5 seed Belgium’s Yuhan Tan 27-25, 21-13 and Dziolko the victor against Germany’s Max Weisskirchen in 3 sets in the semis. Having endured 2 matches lasting over an hour in previous rounds, this was one of Malkov’s shorter matches and he ran out the winner in 2 sets 21-13, 21-11 to become the champion.

In the Women’s Doubles the top 2 seeds, Bulgaria’s Gabriela & Stefani Stoeva and England’s Heather Olver & Lauren Smith, contested the final. The Bulgarian pair had earlier beaten  no.4 seeds England’s Sophie Brown & Kate Robertshaw in 2 sets and the English pair were victorious against the French pairing of Marie Batomene & Emilie Lefel. The 1st set of the final went to the Stoevas 21-10 but the 2nd set was a much closer affair with the Bulgarian pair just edging it 22-20 to take the win.

In the final match of the evening, the Men’s Doubles,  the top 2 seeds, England’s Marcus Ellis & Chris Langridge and Poland’s Adam Cwalina & Przemyslaw Wacha met in the final. Earlier in the day the English pair had beaten no. 8 seeds Scotland’s Martin Campbell & Patrick Machugh in 2 sets 21-12, 21-11 and the Polish pair were victors over England’s Andrew Ellis & Peter Mills again in 2 sets. In a ding-dong battle which lasted 70 minutes Ellis and Langridge eventuall y prevailed in 3 sets 21-16. 16-21, 21-16 to run out champions.

And so the Yonex Welsh International is over for another year. Badminton Wales would like to thank all the players, coaches, officials and volunteers for making it such an enjoyable event.
