Maxime Moreels - WINT 2014

Day 3 of the Yonex Welsh International and the rounds of 16 and 8.

In the Men’s Singles, Belgium’s Maxime Moreels (pictured above) had a superb 3 set victory over the no 1 seed, Sweden’s Henri Hurskainen, in the round of 16 but was unable to follow it up as he was beaten by England’s Toby Penty in the quarter final. Scot Gordon Thomson’s run through the qualifying and main draw came to an end as he was beaten by no 8 seed, Slovenia’s Iztok Utrosa, who then beat qualifier, Germany’s Max Weisskirchen, to reach the semis. Having beaten England’s Alex Lane in the round of 16, Scotland’s Kieran Merrilees then went on to record an excellent win against no 3 seed, Chinese Taipei’s Tzu Wei Wang to move into the semis where he will meet Austria’s Matthias Almer, who produced an excellent performance in the quarters to defeat no 2 seed and last year’s winner, Spain’s Pablo Abian. 

In the Ladies’ Singles the top 4 seeds all moved safely through to the semi-finals. Top seed, Spain’s Beatriz Corrales, eased through with victories over England’s Ira Banerjee and Belgium’s Marie Demy while 2nd seed, Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri, enjoyed victories over Switzerland’s Ayla Huser and the remaining Welsh hope Carissa Turner. 3rd seed, England’s Fontaine Chapman, moved through with wins over Wales’ Jordan Hart and Lithuania’s Akvile Stapusaityte in a thrilling 3-setter and 4th seed, India’s Saili Rane, also needed 3 sets against Germany’s Yvonne Li to progress.

In the Men’s Doubles Matt Nottingham & Harley Towler put out the Canadian top seeds Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng in 2 sets to reach the semis where they will meet fellow English pair and no 5 seeds Ben Stawski and Gary Fox who ended the hopes of Welsh pair Nic Strange and Oliver Gwilt before going on to beat England’s Peter Briggs and Tom Wolfenden. The Anglo-Scottish pair of Chris Coles and Paul van Rietvelde beat the no 7 seeds, Canada’s Phillippe Charron and Toby Ng, and will now face Scottish pair Gordon Thomson and Adam Hall for a place in the final.

In the Ladies Doubles,  the no 1 seeds Bulgaria’s Gabriela & Stefani Stoeva, moved comfortably into the semis where they will play the no 4 seeds, England’s Heather Olver & Lauren Smith. In the other half of the draw England’s Sophie Brown & Kate Robertshaw reached the semis with excellent victories over the Canadian no 2 seeds, Alex Bruce & Phyllis Chan and then Spain’s Laura Molina & Haidee Ojeda in 3 tight sets. They will now play fellow English pair Jennie Moore & Victoria Williams who end the hopes of Ireland’s Jennie King & Sinead Chambers in the quarters.   

In the Mixed Doubles the no 1 seeds from Canada, Toby Ng & Alex Bruce progressed to the semis with victories over Scotland’s Adam Hall & Julie MacPherson and England’s Matt Nottingham & Alyssa Lim where they will play England’s Chris Coles & Sophie Brown, victors over fellow English pair Oliver Baczala & Victoria Williams in the quarters. Joining them in the semis are England’s Gregory Mairs & Jennie Moore who ended Wales’ Oliver & Emily Gwilt’s hopes before beating England’s Peter Briggs & Helena Lewczynska and Germany’s Max Weisskirchen & Eva Janssens who were victorious over Spain’s Pablo Abian & Haidee Ojeda in the quarters.

Now onto today’s semis and finals where we look forward to some very exciting matches.
