2014 Yonex Welsh International - Day 1

Day 1 of the 2014 Yonex Welsh International and the 1st and 2nd qualifying rounds.

In the Ladies’ Singles Wales’ Jordan Hart had a successful day, beating England’s Lizzie Tolman 21-16, 21-15 to move into the Main Draw where she was joined by England’s Miu Lin Ngan, Paige Butler, Tsui-Yee Lau, Helena Cable, Til’Shiloh Shaw & Lydia Jane Powell and Scotland’s Julie MacPherson. Highlight of the round was a very close encounter between Til’Shiloh Shaw and Nicola Gresty with Shaw eventually winning through 21-13, 23-25, 21-19.

In the Men’s Singles England’s Rohan Midha, James Farmer, Ross Green, Joshua Young, Matthew Widdicombe, Darren Adamson, Sean Vendy, Alex Marritt and Ben Dolman progressed to the 3rd qualifying round where they were joined by Scotland’s Josh Neil, Gordon Thomson and Ben Torrance, Ireland’s Tony Stephenson, Sweden’s Peter Yngvesson, Malaysia’s Scott Qi Cong Tsang and Germany’s Max Weisskirchen.

There was no joy for Welsh Juniors Tsung Fong Mo, Matthew Pritchard and William Kitching who were all beaten by English opposition in the 1st qualifying round. 

In the Men’s Doubles Jed Arksey and Alex Lane moved into the Main Draw after a tight match against fellow English pair Craig and Marcus Smith (21-14, 18-21, 21-18) where they were joined by Germany’s Bjarne Geiss and Daniel Seifert.

In the only Mixed Doubles qualifying match England’s Harry Arksey and Fee Teng Liew progressed after a close 2-setter (21-19, 21-19) against Callum Hemming and Lizzie Tolman. 

We now look forward to Day 2 today which sees the 3rd qualifying round of the Men’s Singles and the Main Draw and some tough matches for the Welsh players.

In the Singles events Dan Font will tackle England’s Alex Lane, Carissa Turner finds herself against 7th seed Nanna Vainio (Finland), Aimee Moran will play 6th seed Jana Ciznarova (Slovakia) and Jordan Hart is matched against Scotland’s Julie MacPherson.

In the Men’s Doubles the new Welsh partnership of Nic Strange and Oliver Gwilt will play England’s James Lauder and Andrew Wainwright and in the Ladies’ Doubles Anglo-Welsh pairing, Aimee Moran and Kerri Scott, have drawn the English duo, Evie Burbidge and Lexi Gilders.

In the Mixed event Welsh hopefuls Nic Strange and Jordan Hart will contest a difficult first round match against England’s Oliver Baczala and Victoria Williams whilst brother and sister pair, Oliver and Emilie Gwilt will play English pair Max Flynn and Elizabeth McMorrow.
