Greater numbers of world-class players than ever before are entering the Yonex Welsh International Badminton Championships following a competition level upgrade this November. The premier event will be held over 4 days (29th November – 2nd December) at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff.

The upgrade from a Series level to a Challenger level incorporates a $10,000 increase in prize money up for grabs by the contenders. Organiser of the event James Phillips explains, “We’ve always had good players but the standards are going to be raised that little bit higher.”

With over 200 players from 25 countries battling it out at the Yonex sponsored event, Phillips says, “It’s an opportunity to see some of the best players in the world, some of the top 30 will be attending so there’ll be some really good games to watch.”

The Men’s singles event has attracted Tien Chen Chou from Chinese Taipei who is ranked 33 in the world while the Women’s singles includes Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva who is ranked 18 in the world. The Mixed event has some top English players including Marcus Ellis, Gabby White, Jenny Wallwork and Chris Langridge.
The 14 strong Welsh contingent includes a number of international players. Men’s doubles pairing Daniel Font and Oliver Gwilt, recent winners of the Irish Futures event, will be competing in the main draw as will Joe Morgan and Nic Strange who have already won two European tournaments this season, most recently the Iceland Open. The Women’s events see Welsh internationals and previous Commonwealth contenders, Carissa Turner and Sarah Thomas. Turner says of the event, “I’m looking forward to it, it’s always a big deal for anyone who gets to play in their home tournament.”
